Millage election in Arkadelphia is Tuesday; early voting period drew 8% of district voters

The one-week period of early voting in a special election to decide the fate of a millage increase to erect a new Arkadelphia High School drew 9% of the registered voters living within the boundaries of the Arkadelphia Public School District.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 18. Polls will be open from 7:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. Voting takes place at the Arkadelphia Recreation Center, 2555 Twin Rivers Dr.

Since polls opened for early voting on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 848 of the district’s 9,221 voters turned out to cast a ballot, according to the Clark County Clerk’s Office.

The Arkadelphian will livestream the results of the election on its Facebook page once polls are in Tuesday evening and the election commission announces the tallies. We expect the results to be announced within half an hour from the polls closing, between 7:30-8 p.m.

The measure calls for 3 additional mills to be collected annually on district residents’ personal and property taxes. The proposal asks for the reallocation of 2 mills from maintenance and operations to the district’s debt service.

If voters support the measure, the school district will be able to cash in on a $19 million pledge from state partnership funding. The district has committed $6 million toward the project from its building fund. Taxpayers, if they support the increase, would fund some $37 million over a 30-year span to build the $62 million campus.

Included in the proposed campus are a fine arts auditorium with enough seating for 600 people; a career education center that would house agriscience and career pathway programs; a sports arena capable of hosting regional basketball tournaments; and a covered outdoor field for band practice, JROTC, cheer, dance and athletics; and a safe room.
