Video of horse whipping lands area man in jail

Law enforcement in Clark County didn’t find any humor in a video posted to social media of a man laughing after beating a horse.

Camden resident Labraylon Hughes, 20, allegedly struck a horse repeatedly while its bridle was tied to two fence posts in a barn located in Clark County.

The incident was captured on video and posted to Facebook, which was then shared with Sheriff Jason Watson on Aug. 14. The sheriff delegated the investigation to Sgt. Rick Loy, who reviewed the video showing an individual striking the horse 17 times or more with a leather whip, or quirt.

Another person, presumably the one filming the incident, can be heard laughing throughout the video.

The video circulated on Facebook, soon capturing the attention of animal rights activists who condemned the activity and called on law enforcement to take action. The video below may be disturbing to most viewers:

Hughes was ultimately identified as the suspect, and was arrested Aug. 17 on police charges of Aggravated Cruelty to a Dog, Cat or Equine. The offense is a Class D felony, and formal charges are pending a decision by 9E Prosecuting Attorney Dan Turner.

Hughes was being held at the Clark County Detention Center pending a first appearance before Circuit Judge Blake Batson. The matter will be forwarded to 9E Prosecuting Attorney Dan Turner for consideration of formal charges, with future court dates to follow.
