Henderson State University Choirs will present their final concert of the spring semester April 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church-Arkadelphia sanctuary. The performance is free and open to the public.
Entitled “Hope Lingers On,” the concert will include works by Lodovico Viadana, Clara Schumann, Alice Parker, and others. Dr. Bill Higgins will be the featured soloist.
“The music for this performance is drawn from a broad landscape, but each piece works within the whole to express a sense of hope for the present and future,” said Dr. Jonathan Barranco, director of choral activities at Henderson. “I am most excited that this performance will feature several of our student conductors and leaders, each of whom has increased my hope for the future of music making.”
Henderson State University Bands will present “Feelin’ the Blues,” a concert featuring the Wind Ensemble and Symphony Band, April 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Russell Fine Arts recital hall.
The Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Nevada Mills, will perform works by King, Gould, Standridge, End, and George Gershwin.
“This is the 100th anniversary of Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin,” said Mills. “WIth that being the major work to build around, it was only natural to keep our program focused on jazz and blues.”
The performance of Rhapsody in Blue will feature Dr. May Tsao-Lim, professor of music, on piano.
Dr. Jamie Lipton, along with student conductors Andrew Deuel, Jacob Burks, Kaden Manley, and Lanie Richter, will conduct the Symphony Band as it performs works from Cesarini, Balmages, Curnow, La Plante, and Daehn.
“We feel this is an exciting concert with many different genres to enjoy,” Mills said.
The concert is free and open to the public. It can also be viewed online via Facebook Live at facebook.com/HSUBand.
