Woman charged for tampering with evidence to protect armed felon

A Whelen Springs woman is facing charges for allegedly removing a gun from an accident scene involving a convicted felon.

Hunter Fulton was involved in a two-vehicle crash Aug. 9 on East Whelen Road. The other driver would tell police that he witnessed Fulton exit his own vehicle with a scoped rifle and a case of alcoholic beverages, both of which he tossed into the woods near the accident scene. Fulton, 31, then explained to the other driver that he was a convicted felon.

Others who arrived at the scene told police they saw a black Dodge pickup stop at the scene and leave with a rifle prior to deputies’ arrival. Three witnesses identified the female driver as 38-year-old Jessica Lynn Malcom, of Whelen Springs. A check of the Arkansas criminal database showed Malcom to own a vehicle matching that description.

During a police interview with Fulton, he admitted that Malcom showed up at the accident scene. Fulton said what he threw into the woods was a stick with black tape on it, as well as a case of alcoholic tea, and that if he told police the truth he would get into trouble.

Lt. Russell Ursery of the Clark County Sheriff’s Office initiated contacted with Malcom via Facebook Messenger, and a phone call from Malcom followed. Malcom denied taking the firearm but said she knew Fulton had one in his possession.

Fulton was arrested on Aug. 11 and released on $20,000 bond Aug. 15 following a court order to reduce the originally set bond of $50,000. Posting bond was First Arkansas Bail Bonds Inc. Fulton is charged with Possession of a Firearm by Certain Persons, a Class D felony that carries a potential prison sentence of up to 6 years and/or fines totaling up to $10,000.

Malcom’s bond was set at $2,500 in a first court appearance held Aug. 14. She is charged with Tampering with Physical Evidence, also a Class D felony.

Pulled over for speeding and swerving, Tennessee trucker nabbed with meth

On Aug. 1 a Clark County deputy observed an eastbound tractor-trailer speeding and swerving on Interstate 30 near the 78 mile-marker, and attempted to make a traffic stop. The vehicle continued for 5 miles, swerving and nearly striking other cars. A traffic stop was made at the 83 mile-marker.

The driver, 44-year-old Joseph Everheart, of Athens, Tennessee, was initially placed in custody for fleeing. Everheart told the arresting deputy that he could neither see the police lights nor hear the siren.

A search of Everheart’s pockets yielded a bag of methamphetamine weighing 4.2 grams. Also located on his person was a loaded pistol.

Everheart is charged with Possession of a Schedule II Controlled Substance, a Class D felony.

Bond was set at $5,000 during a first court appearance held Aug. 3. Bond was posted that day by First Arkansas Bail Bonds Inc.

Felony battery charge for Gurdon woman

A Gurdon woman faces a felony battery charge following an attack on an Arkadelphia woman.

On the morning of Aug. 3, the Arkadelphia Police Department was called to Ouachita Village Apartments, 11 Cypress Rd., where a female had fled her own residence to escape her alleged attacker, identified as Angela Dawn Welch, 46, of Gurdon.

The woman said Welch showed up to her apartment around 6:30 a.m. and struck her in the face. The victim fled to a neighbor’s residence to seek help. The blow to her face caused a laceration that required medical treatment.

Police caught up with Welch, who admitted that she struck the victim, but said she was acting in self-defense. The victim is more than two decades Welch’s senior.

Welch is charged with 2nd-degree Battery, and prosecutors are seeking a sentence enhancement given her status as a habitual offender. She could face up to 12 years in prison for the offense.

Bond was set at $50,000 during a first court appearance on Aug. 3. Bond was posted on Aug. 11 by First Arkansas Bail Bonds.
