Car wrecks in South Arkansas kill 2, hurt 2

Two people were killed in recent days on highways in South Arkansas.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, June 30, a head-on collision involving two vehicles claimed the life of a young Star City man.

Kavion Winston, 24, was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Impala south on Arkansas Highway 530 in rural Jefferson County when he attempted to pass multiple vehicles on or near the Pinebergen Overpass, according to a preliminary fatal crash summary posted by Arkansas State Police.

The maneuver forced an oncoming 2016 GMC Sierra to veer off the roadway. Winston also veered off the highway and struck the pickup truck head on.

Winston perished as a result of the car crash. The driver of the Sierra, 24-year-old Shawn Wylie, of Monticello, was taken to Jefferson County Medical Center for injuries. Winston’s body was taken to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.

The crash happened at 3:30 p.m. under clear skies and on dry roads, according to investigating State Trooper Reagan Eades.

Another head-on collision in Garland County left one person dead on Wednesday morning, July 1.

At about 5:35 a.m. Billy Joe Parker II, 57, was driving a northbound 2013 Chevy Silverado on Arkansas Highway 227 (Mountain Pine Road) when he crossed the center line and struck an oncoming 2023 GMC Yukon.

Parker, of Mountain Pine, died in the crash. The driver of the SUV, 41-year-old Keith Frederick Ebert, of Hot Springs Village, was transported to CHI St. Vincent in Hot Springs for injuries. Parker’s body was taken to the Garland County Coroner’s Office.
