Here’s a look at headlines around the area and state for Friday, Aug. 14, 2026:
Move-In Day for Henderson State University residence halls is Saturday, Aug. 15, from 8 a.m. to noon. On-campus apartment move-in began Thursday. Across the ravine, Ouachita Baptist University will be welcoming freshmen and new students into residence halls Aug. 21, with returning students moving in Aug. 22-24.
Hot Springs National Park ranked 10th among the most popular national parks in the U.S., according to a recent hoppa study compiled from Google search data. The state’s national park generated more than 1.2 million Google searches between July 2025 and June 2026, and came after the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Wyoming’s Yellowstone National Park ranked first in the study.
In response to the extreme heat impacting the state, Entergy Arkansas announced Thursday, Aug. 13, that it is suspending utility disconnects through Friday, Aug. 21, and will resume Monday, Aug. 24.
The lumber market isn’t doing so hot, as the price of wood products has dropped while rising costs due to labor and fuel have cut into profit margins for timber companies, reports Arkansas Business. This means sawmills are closing or paring down on shifts to offset lag and expenditures.
Good news for row crop farmers: Soybeans are predicted to yield about 57 bushels per acre this harvest season, a new state record, according to the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture. The previous records, set in 2025 and 2024, were 55 bushels per acre. An analysis from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agriculture Statistics Service reported 3.45 million acres of soybeans in Arkansas, up from the 3.2 million in the June acreage report and the highest total since 2017.
