A local man remains in a Little Rock hospital suffering from serious injuries after he was struck in an Arkadelphia parking lot.
Edwin Stanley Henriquez-Canenguez, 53, was in the Atwoods parking lot loading a bag of dog food into the bed of his pickup truck when a Ford Focus came barreling through the parking lot around 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, according to a police report filed at the Arkadelphia Police Department.
Witnesses told police that the car, which entered from the east near the Dollar General side, struck Henriquez and the rear of his truck, spinning it from its parking space and carrying Henriquez some 33 feet before he fell to the ground and was run over. Henriquez, who lists a Gurdon address, had been parked in the middle of the three available rows of parking spaces. The driver, after striking Henriquez, continued in a northwesterly direction until colliding with the concrete base of a light pole on the western side of the lot.
Police arrived to find Henriquez lying unconscious on the ground, surrounded by bystanders. Witnesses said they found the driver displaying signs that she was suffering from a seizure. One of the witnesses broke a passenger window to gain entry to the vehicle, shifting it to park and removing the keys from the ignition. Police found no signs of intoxicants, drugs or medications inside the vehicle. Officers also noted in their report that the driver appeared to have suffered a medical episode prior to the collision. The driver is a 22-year-old local college student.
Medics treated both the pedestrian and the driver at the scene, ultimately transporting Henriquez by ambulance to UAMS Hospital in Little Rock, and the driver to Baptist Health Medical Center-Arkadelphia.
The APD report notes that Henriquez suffered from “multiple system trauma” at the scene.
