South Arkansas car crashes leave 4 dead

Four people died in recent days in car collisions on South Arkansas highways.

On Tuesday, Oct. 14, a pedestrian was struck and killed in Texarkana. According to an Arkansas State Police preliminary fatal crash summary, 75-year-old Forrest Williams walked into the lane of traffic on East Street when a southbound Chevrolet Silverado struck him.

The report indicates that Williams was transported to Christus Saint Michaels hospital in TEXarkana, where he succumbed to injuries. The report does not name the driver who struck him.

Weather conditions were clear, and the roads were dry when the incident happened at 10:06 a.m., according to investigating State Trooper Jacob Meadows.

In the southeastern corner of the state, a head-on collision in rural Chicot County Wednesday involving a tractor-trailer left one person deceased and a second person injured.

A report says Dino Salinas, 57, of Crosbyton, Texas, was traveling north on U.S. Highway 165 in a 2015 Mazda when he crossed the centerline and struck a southbound 2020 Mack truck operated by 79-year-old Floyd Jones, of Montrose. Jones was taken to Chicot Memorial Hospital for treatment to injuries not listed in the report, and Salinas’s body was transported to Bishop-King Funeral Home.

Trooper David Menotti noted clear skies and dry road conditions when the accident occurred, at 5:20 a.m. Oct. 15.

Reduced visibility was likely a factor in a head-on collision Thursday afternoon that left two dead in Lafayette County.

Sara Nix, 28, of Bradley, was behind the wheel of a 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe, traveling west on Arkansas Highway 160, near the city of Gin. Nix was traveling with a juvenile passenger.

“Smoke from a nearby fire caused reduced visibility,” the report states, noting that Nix’s vehicle was struck by an oncoming 2007 Freightliner.

Nix and her passenger died in the crash. Their bodies were taken to Smith Funeral Home in Stamps.

Investigating Trooper Justin Cherry noted the weather was otherwise clear at the time of the accident, 3:35 p.m. on Oct. 16.

Nix was a registered nurse in the labor and delivery unit at Christus St. Michael hospital in Texarkana, according to her Facebook page.

Editor’s Note: Preliminary Arkansas State Police fatality reports sometimes contain information that turns out to be inaccurate. Typical errors include spelling errors in names, or incorrect ages; outdated hometown information; vehicle direction of travel; and incident times. The ASP sometimes corrects these errors in updated reports. ASP reports omit names of passengers or drivers who are not injured, even in instances when uninjured drivers may appear to be at fault. The reports also omit names of juveniles who were injured or killed, although we report those names when obtained through other sources.
