Gum Springs man gets 10 years probation for sex with juvenile

Michael Shepherd

A Gum Springs man was sentenced to 10 years of supervised probation in Clark County Circuit Court for one count of second-degree sexual assault.

Michael Wayne Shepherd, a taxidermist and butcher, entered a plea agreement Friday before 9E Circuit Judge Blake Batson. Shepherd, 63, was initially charged with rape and two counts of sexual assault.

According to court documents, Shepherd became the target of a rape investigation when the victim, now an adult, came forward in 2023 with accusations of “deviant sexual activity” while she was a teenager.

Under conditions of the negotiated plea agreement, Shepherd was ordered to 120 days of house arrest with an ankle monitor and to pay $1,790 in fines and court costs. He is prohibited from having accounts on social media or dating sites and is not to have unsupervised contact with children. He will additionally be required to complete counseling courses.

Shepherd’s defense attorney was Clinton DeWitt; deputy Prosecutor Gina White represented the state in the case.
