Four Arkansas counties were placed under burn bans ahead of the Aug. 17 weekend as the entire southern half of the state is now listed under a “moderate” threat of wildfire danger.
As of Friday, Aug. 16, 2024, Dallas, Sevier and Howard counties have joined Montgomery County in placing bans on burning outdoors, according to the Arkansas Forestry Division.
All counties south of the Arkansas River Valley, to the west, and Interstate 40, to the east, are under a moderate wildfire danger.
County judges issue burn bans.
A chance of severe thunderstorms throughout the state may help to improve conditions, though any precipitation associated with the storms will likely not be enough to knock back drought conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Little Rock, severe weather chances are set to return to the region Friday and last through the weekend. The primary severe weather hazards will be damaging winds and hail.
In Arkadelphia, there was a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms Friday afternoon. The extended forecast does not show precipitation returning to the area. More excessive heat, however, is imminent as highs Saturday will top out at 100 degrees. The temperature Sunday will not be far below, at 97 degrees.
Expect highs in the low 90s beginning Monday and throughout the week, with nighttime lows falling to the mid 60s by Tuesday.
