Jerry O’Neal

Jerry Don O’Neal slipped his lines at the pier of life on May 20th, 2026, and set sail on his final and eternal patrol. He was born on November 13, 1948, in Hot Springs the son of the late Jerry and Rosie Cox O’Neal.

Jerry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and faithful friend. He loved the Lord deeply, loved his family fiercely, and lived life in his own unforgettable way. Jerry was known to his grandchildren as “Grumpy” — a nickname worn with pride and earned through his stubborn streak, quick remarks, and the way he always told you exactly what he thought.

He shared 53 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Susie O’Neal. Together they built a life full of faith, and adventure. They especially loved traveling and cruising together, making memories everywhere they went. Of all the places Jerry traveled, his favorite was Antarctica.

Jerry proudly served his country as a submariner aboard the USS Sargo during the Vietnam War. He continued his service in the Army Reserves, until he retired with 28 years of service. During his final days he regaled his family with stories from his time on the Sargo.

Jerry enjoyed studying the Bible, especially the book of Revelation and teachings about the end times. His love for Scripture gave him a deep peace about where he was going.

He leaves behind his wife, Susie; his son, Jeremy O’Neal; his daughter, Whitney Peterson and husband Chris; grandchildren Mikayla Dees and husband Jesse, Wyatt Peterson, and Christian O’Neal; and his precious great-granddaughter, Margo Dees, and his sister, Myrt Fritts of Mufreesboro. He also leaves behind many family members and dear friends who will miss his stories, humor, honesty, and unmistakable personality.

Though his family grieves his passing, they find comfort in knowing Jerry is finally home with his Savior — fully healed, at peace, and experiencing the eternity he studied and looked forward to.

A celebration of Jerry’s life will be held at Bowen Cemetery on Monday May 25th, 2026, at 11 AM.
