AMITY, Arkansas — Clark County deputies probed a July 4th complaint of a reported bomb explosion that took out a rural Arkansas man’s mailbox.

According to an incident report released this week at the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, a 69-year-old Calvin Road man reported that his mailbox was blown to smithereens late on the evening of July 4, 2024.

At 4:20 p.m. Friday, July 5, Deputy Fred Phillips received information from the resident “regarding a bomb being exploded” in his mailbox, the incident report states. The resident lives about 3 miles southeast of Amity.

Deputy Phillips phoned the resident, who relayed that he heard an explosion at about 11:40 p.m. the night before but, given it was the July 4th holiday, he thought little of the bang and therefore did not probe the matter further.

The next morning, however, he “found his mailbox had been blown up, with pieces … over 25 feet away” from its post, the report states.

A relative of the complainant took note of a UTV, occupied by unidentified individuals, that drove by the residence about 20 minutes prior to the time of the explosion, according to the report.

Deputies spoke with both the complainant and “several subjects” thought to be involved, but were reportedly unable to name a suspect.

Deputies were unable to determine what type of explosive device was used in the reported bombing, according to the report. The resident was provided with information about federal laws regarding mailbox vandalism, as well as a phone number for the postal inspector, the report states.
