Following a slump during the Covid-19 pandemic, juniors at Arkadelphia High School are showing signs of improvement in their American College Testing (ACT) scores.
Jeanette Turner, director of curriculum & instruction at Arkadelphia Public Schools, told school board members that ACT scores are back to normal in all areas tested: math, science, English and reading. Plus, it was noted, the scores reflect testing among all juniors at AHS — not just students with college aspirations.
The 2024 junior class averaged a composite score of 18.5, higher than the state’s average composite score of 18.2. The district’s average in all areas but math surpassed the state’s average. Across the board, AHS juniors scored an average of 17.1 in math, 19.4 in science, 18.1 in English and 18.9 in reading; the state’s average was 17.5 in math, 18.7 in science, 17.5 in English and 18.6 in reading.
Turner’s slideshow further detailed a five-year trend for composite scores and all subjects, and showed that AHS juniors had lower scores from 2021-2023. Composite scores were 18.7 in the spring of 2020, when Covid was rearing its head. The three-year composite average following the pandemic, when many pupils were studying virtually, was 17.5. This year, the average is back up to 18.5.
