Water under a wooden floor will likely bring about the closure of the Recreation Center’s gym for most of the summer, Arkadelphia City Manager Gary Brinkley told members of the city board Tuesday evening, June 18, 2024.
Brinkley said that floorboards near the concession end of the gym began showing a “soft spot” which was then followed by the buckling of the floor in the amount of about 6 inches. Investigation found water underneath the floor. Apparently, two water lines run under the floor and may have sprung a leak or the moisture could be coming from rainwater infiltration.
Two bids were solicited and the cheapest option appears to be to cut off the water lines, allowing the area to dry out so the floor boards can go back down as the moisture leaves. If this occurs, the city will only be out $36,900. If the maple floorboards have to be replaced, it could cost as much as $119,000.
At the motion of Director Jason Jones, the board approved the $36,900 option.
In other business, the board:
• Waived sidewalk construction at 17th and Caddo Streets.
• Heard a water utilities construction report from Superintendent David Green.
