Arkadelphia school board adopts alternative calendar for 2024-25

Beginning in the fall 2024 semester, Arkadelphia Public Schools will move to an alternative tradition school schedule following a decision Tuesday by the school board.

The schedule adds flexibility for breaks. It also shifts the student instruction model from “days of instruction” to “hours of instruction.”

Under state law, students must have 178 days of instruction or 1,068 hours of instruction, which equates to 178 days at 6 hours per day. By shifting to an hours-based model, the district can more readily recoup time lost due to inclement weather while also having the flexibility for extending break times throughout the school year.

The 2024-25 school year begins Aug. 14. Observed holidays are Labor Day, Sept. 2; Thanksgiving, Nov. 25-29; Christmas, Dec. 19-Jan. 3; Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 20; President’s Day, Feb. 17; Spring Break, March 24-28; and Good Friday, April 18. The calendar allows for 11 teacher work, flex or professional development days throughout the year.

Superintendent Nikki Thomas said the calendar was proposed by the Personnel Policy Committee and endorsed by district administration.
