A Walnut Street home sustained heavy damages Friday morning, June 12, after a fire broke out in a bedroom, Arkadelphia Fire Department officials said.

Just before 10:30 a.m., AFD and other agencies were dispatched to 1502 Walnut St. for a report that a back bedroom was fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters doused the blaze from various locations into the residence, including from the rooftop, where firemen sawed through to spray water below.

While the back bedroom in the northwestern corner of the home had the most damages from fire, the rest of the residence sustained smoke and water damages. Fortunately, there were no injuries. The female resident, who told officials that she was asleep when the fire woke her, was able to escape with her own life and those of most of her pets, reportedly including dogs and a bird. We’re told that a raccoon, which she kept as a pet, perished in the blaze.

Arkadelphia Fire Chief Andy Neel said the cause of the fire was not immediately known, though fire officials will continue to investigate the cause.

Red Cross and Arkadelphia First Baptist Church responded to the resident’s aid.
