An Arkadelphia house fire could have been worse had it not been for specialized equipment on the city’s new fire truck.
The Arkadelphia Fire Department was summoned to a house fire at 1743 Sylvia St. Wednesday, July 12, at 3:06 p.m. All occupants of the residence made it out of the burning home safely. The fire reportedly originated in the kitchen area, Arkadelphia Fire Chief Jason Hunt said.
Firefighters made entry inside the home and sprayed not water, but foam, onto the flames. The truck is equipped with two tanks: one carries water, the other a concentrate that, combined with the water and pressure, releases a fire-suppressing foam.
“With the foam, we were able to cut our knock-down time in half,” Hunt said, explaining that while water would hit a fire and run down a wall, the foam instead sticks to the wall and suffocates the flames. The flames were out in less than five minutes, Hunt said.
The chief said Wednesday afternoon’s fire was the first house fire serviced by the department’s new fire truck, which became part of the AFD fleet earlier this year.
While the official cause of the fire was not immediately known, the fire chief said he will return Thursday morning to conduct an investigation.
