BITS & PIECES: Magnolia, you sweet thing

By Joel Phelps | The Arkadelphian

Tuesday apparently was National Stand in the Middle of the Aisle at the Supermarket Day. No one told us about this event, as we had difficulty traversing the aisles of Walmart while either stockers, curbside pickup shoppers and others stood idly in the middle of what felt like every. single. aisle.

Arkansas State University this week announced its student theatre production schedule. We’re stoked that the ASU System is able to promote its students’ work. However, we would prefer to promote a student theatre schedule from Henderson State University. It was only a few years ago that the likes of students such as Derrick Sims were making Henderson proud.

Someone inquired recently about posting a classified ad in hopes to trade the hair from his neck and/or back for a little scalp hair. Oh, wait, that was Yours Truly. The offer stands for anyone willing to make the trade.

Today we’re heading to Columbia County to meet our friend and mentor, Mike McNeill of magnoliareporter.com, to talk shop about the digital news business. It’s pretty evident from our standpoint that The Arkadelphian is such a new concept for so many folks in our area. We’re getting the page views just the same as (if not more than) a printed paper is being sold. We still hope to continue the ongoing partnerships with our print counterparts so that the public is fully informed and no public meeting is left unattended by a watchdog such as The Arkadelphian or The Southern Standard. Hopefully we’ll return Wednesday afternoon with some answers from McNeill — who’s been in this digital news business for 12 years now — that could help ease some folks’ transition from traditional newsprint to this 21st century medium that appears to be here to stay, at least for now. Mike, our followers should know, is a veteran newspaper reporter who turned to the digital medium well before print’s death was imminent. His advice should be sound.
