The crash occurred Thursday, Sept. 23, at 12:30 a.m.
A state police fatal crash summary indicates that Barkman, who was westbound in a Hyundai Elantra, had swerved to avoid something in the roadway and steered back to the right in an attempt to regain control of the vehicle. The report notes the vehicle then crossed back into the right lane and onto the shoulder, striking a ditch and traveling 70 feet in the ditch. “The right front tire collided into the ditch,” noted Cpl. Christopher Harper, who investigated the accident. “The vehicle continued traveling into the ditch for approximately 90 feet more and the front bumper collided with a stump.”
The vehicle caught fire at that point.
Barkman’s body is being held at Welch Funeral Home in Arkadelphia.
Road conditions were dry, and the weather was clear.
