The Arkadelphia City Board of Directors on Tuesday, Oct. 20, will take up a decades-old ordinance regarding vicious dogs, as the city’s prosecutor is recommending an amendment to a 2007 ordinance outlining dog regulations.
The current ordinance does not specifically address the immediate removal of dangerous dogs or address pit bulls in multi-family dwellings. A memo to directors says that has been an issue in recent incidents with dangerous dogs.
The amendments, if passed, would allow the immediate seizure and impoundment of a dog that has caused a serious injury, and would also restrict residents of a multi-family dwelling to keep a pit bull other than one registered as a show dog with the American Kennel Club or Universal Kennel Club.
An emergency clause is included with the amendment that would put it into effect immediately upon its passage.
The amendments are part of a lengthy agenda directors will take up when they meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Town Hall Boardroom.
See the full agenda below.
Meetings are open to the public, and residents have the option to address directors in an open session forum following the meeting. Speakers are limited to 5 minutes and may not yield their time to another speaker.
