Severe weather threat lingers through Wednesday

Following a round of severe thunderstorms that swept over Arkansas late Friday into Saturday morning, the National Weather Service in Little Rock says we’re not yet out of the woods.

Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms are possible across the southern half of Arkansas mid-morning Monday through late afternoon. Large hail and damaging wind gusts are the primary threats, though a tornado or two cannot be ruled out.

Press reports say the NWS confirmed a tornado touched down before 6 a.m. Saturday, March 7, near the Nevada County town of Willisville, about 45 miles south of Arkadelphia. One person was reportedly injured in the storm, and one mobile home was swept from its foundation.

Tornadoes will again be a possibility on Tuesday, March 10, as an upper level system tracks across the region. Showers and thunderstorms are expected that afternoon and evening across Arkansas, and a few of these storms could become strong to severe. The main threats Tuesday will be damaging winds and large hail.

Severe weather will again be possible on Wednesday over portions of eastern Arkansas, though uncertainties remain on finer details. All severe hazards appear possible, according to forecasters.

New precipitation amounts after Wednesday could range from 1-2 inches with locally higher amounts possible. Isolated flash flooding may occur, and widespread heavy rainfall will likely result in increased streamflow to small and medium tributaries across the state.
