State parks in Southwest Arkansas offer Memorial Day adventure

Arkansas State Parks in the southwestern region of the state promises adventure for travelers and guests this Memorial Day weekend.

DeGray Lake Resort is offering a Geocaching Island Hopper adventure on Monday, May 26. Whether you’re a diehard geocacher or completely new to the activity, this excursion is sure to satisfy your craving for adventure. With GPS units/smartphones in hand, guests will travel by boat to a few of DeGray Lake’s islands in search of hidden capsules. Smartphone users are encouraged to download a geocaching app ahead of time to be ready for the action. Pricing is $14 for adults, $8 for kids 6-12 and free for children under 6. Time of the event is 1-2:30 p.m. at the State Park Marina. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes for walking on rocky, uneven terrain. Seating is limited, and reservations can be made beginning Sunday at noon at the marina. Arrive 10-15 minutes early, because the boat must depart on time.

Murfreesboro’s Crater of Diamonds is offering Diamond Mining 101 on Monday, May 26. Meet a park interpreter in the Diamond Discovery Center to learn the tricks of the trade at this demonstration of diamond searching methods. Regular mine admission is $15 for ages 13 and up; $7 for ages 6-12; and free for 5 and under.

On Sunday, May 25, take a Morning Kayak Tour at Daisy State Park. Join a park interpreter at the visitor center for an awesome morning kayak outing. This is an easy kayak expedition, perfect for first-timers or those wanting a relaxing activity. Bring clothing and shoes that can get wet. Event time is 10 a.m. until noon. Admission is $18 for adults or $12 for children ages 6-12. Kayaks are limited, and reservations must be made by 5 p.m. the day before.
