Arkadelphia Public Schools announced its new director of bands, Texas native Larry Brown.

The district said this week in a social media post that Brown brings 34 years of teaching experience to the position. Throughout his career he has taught both middle school and high school bands at 3C, 4A, 5A and 6A classifications, and his students have achieved recognition for excellence in the areas of marching, concert, sight-reading, jazz band, medium ensemble, color guard, winter guard and drumline at the region, state and national levels.
In addition to teaching music and directing band, Brown serves as a judge, clinician and consultant for other bands and has been invited to present clinics at the TMEA Clinic/Convention in San Antonio on three occasions. He plays trombone and recently performed at the opening ceremonies for the 2023 TBA Convention as part of a 76-member trombone choir to commemorate the organization’s 76th anniversary.
Brown holds a bachelor’s degree from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, and did graduate work at East Texas State University.
His connection to The Natural State is through his wife of 38 years, Denise Brown, an Arkansas native who will be working as a Licensed Professional Nurse at a women’s clinic in Benton. The pair met at McNeese State University where they were in band — Larry as trombonist and Denise as a member of the color guard. Their two adult children were both also actively involved in high school band.
The Browns recently built a vacation home in Rison, Arkansas, and enjoy spending time camping, hunting and fishing. In addition, Larry is an avid golfer and collector of sports cards, memorabilia, and vinyl records.
The Browns said they look forward to being part of the Arkadelphia Band family and community and working to continue the band’s tradition of excellence.
