Felony Friday: Stabbing in Texville; I-30 traffic stop leads to arrest of armed felon with gun

This is a roundup of felony charges filed so far in July 2024 by the Clark County Prosecutor’s Office. Some defendants may also have misdemeanor charges against them, but they are not included here. The following names and charges, which are contained within public documents, are gathered from online court records available through ARCourts. Defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Here’s a rundown of felony cases filed recently:

State vs. Venustiano Avila Jr. Possession of a Firearm by a Certain Person, Class D felony. Prosecutor: Gregory Vardaman. Defense: Clint Mathis. According to court records, Avila, 57, of South Houston, Texas, was the passenger of a vehicle pulled over at the 77 eastbound mile-marker of Interstate 30 for having a defective tail light. The driver was unable to provide proof of insurance, giving the Arkansas State Trooper probable cause to search the vehicle. The trooper located a 9mm handgun in the glove compartment, as well as a 7.65mm handgun in a purse belonging to the driver, Nina Avila, 44, also of South Houston. The firearms were checked through dispatch, which advised both were been reported stolen out of Texas and Tennessee. Venustiano Avila showed to have a felony conviction in 2013 originating in Texas. Both were arrested during the traffic stop.

State vs. Anthony D. Anderson. Second Degree Battery, Habitual – Class D felony. Prosecutor: Gregory Vardaman. Defense: Clint Mathis. CLICK HERE for the story.

State vs. Paul Andrew Owens. Residential Burglary, Habitual – Class B felony. Prosecutor: Gregory Vardaman. Defense: Clinton DeWitt. On June 22, 2024, the Arkadelphia Police Department received a complaint that on June 21 Owens was an unwanted guest at a Carpenter Hill Apartments residence and was asked to leave, which he did. Nine hours later, the female resident, frightened by a noise downstairs, followed the sound to find Owens attempting to climb through the kitchen window with half his body inside her apartment. He then exited the window and went to the front door, according to the affidavit, where he was again asked to leave. Investigators were reportedly able to corroborate Owens’s whereabouts based on data from the ankle monitor he was wearing.

State vs. Jason Wayne Bright. Aggravated Assault, Habitual – Class D felony. Prosecutor: Gregory Vardaman. Defense: Clinton DeWitt. A probable cause affidavit says Bright, 51, of Texas Road, stabbed his neighbor with a pocket knife on June 8, 2024. Bright allegedly went to the neighbor’s home and confronted him about an incident that had occurred the previous day. Court documents do not reveal what the initial incident was. The neighbor was taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment to lacerations on his arm and chest.

State vs. J.L. Desean Sims. Possession of a Firearm by a Certain person, Class B felony; Possession of a Defaced Firearm, Class D felony. Prosecutor: Dan Turner. Defense: Not listed. CLICK HERE for the story.
