Jobless rates rise in January; Clark County unemployment at 5.3%

Clark County’s unemployment rate, not seasonally adjusted, is at 5.3% for January 2024, according to a preliminary county-by-county report released by the Arkansas Division of Workforce Services.

According to the report, Clark County had a labor force of 8,246 persons with 7,807 employed and 439 unemployed in January. This compares to December’s labor force of 8.571 with 8,187 employed and 384 unemployed. The unemployment rate in Clark County rose eight-tenths of a percentage point from 4.5% in December.

Clark County had the second-highest unemployment rate in the six-county area surveyed.

Statewide, Arkansas’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose three-tenths of a percentage point to 3.7% in January, while the national jobless rate rose two-tenths of a percentage point to 3.9%.

Of the six neighboring Southwest Arkansas counties surveyed, all but one reported an increase in jobless rates from December to January. Counties are listed with their county seats in parentheses: i.e., Clark County (Arkadelphia):

The unemployment rate for Dallas County (Fordyce) is at 4.7% for January, up from 4.4% in December. Dallas County reports a labor force of 2,624.

The unemployment rate for Hot Spring County (Malvern) is at 4.4% for January, up from 3.9% in December. Hot Spring County reports a labor force of 13,465.

The unemployment rate for Montgomery County (Mt. Ida) is at 6.1% for January, down slightly from 6.2% in December. Montgomery County reports a labor force of 2,840.

The unemployment rate for Nevada County (Prescott) is at 4.5% for January, up from 3.8% in December. Nevada County reports a labor force of 3,293.

The unemployment rate for Ouachita County (Camden) is at 4.5% for January, up from 4.2% in December. Ouachita County reports a labor force of 9,621.

The unemployment rate for Pike County (Murfreesboro) is at 4.2% for January, up from 3.6% in December. Pike County reports a labor force of 3,957.
