Incumbent state Sen. Steve Crowell easily defeated his challenger in the primary election, securing at least 71% of the votes in the six-county district.

The Associated Press called the race in Crowell’s favor at 10:21 p.m. Tuesday, with 94% of votes counted.

Crowell carried 7,565 votes to Rosston resident Mark Silvey’s 2,974. Clark County voters showed overwhelming support for Crowell at the polls, handing the Magnolia Republican 78.8% of the votes cast for that race in Arkadelphia and surrounding towns. Clark County showed more support for Crowell than his own stomping grounds, where he secured 73.8% of Republican supporters.

Both Clark and Columbia counties were listed as leaders in vote share of the race. Crowell also took victories in Hempstead and Nevada counties, where Silvey resides and works.

“I appreciate the Clark County Republican Primary voters for placing their trust in me,” Crowell said in a text to arkadelphian.com. “It’s an honor to serve in the state Senate, and I look forward to continuing to work for you and getting District 3 the attention it deserves.”

District 3 encompasses a six-county strip of Southwest Arkansas, stretching from the Louisiana border to the Bismarck area in Hot Spring County.
