Reddies: Shields, Martinez named GAC Players of the Week

RUSSELLVILLE β€” After its win over previously unbeaten Southeastern Oklahoma, Henderson State had two players recognized by the league office on Monday, as Deldric Shields was named Defensive Player of the Week and Temo Martinez was selected as Special Teams Player of the Week once again.

Shields, who made his first start of the season on Saturday, came up big for the Reddies and led the team with 11 tackles. The native of Pittsburg, Texas made an interception at the end of the first half and also broke up a pass in the fourth quarter.

Martinez earned the GAC weekly award for the second-straight week after scoring nine points in the win over the Savage Storm and connecting on two clutch field goals in the second half. The junior from Dardanelle, Arkansas hit field goals of 33 and 36 yards and was also 3-for-3 on extra points. The Player of the Week award is the fourth of his career at HSU. 

The Reddies (5-0) return home this Saturday when they host East Central (4-1) at 2 p.m. inside Carpenter-Haygood Stadium and Ruggles Field.
