Gurdon man charged with impersonating game warden, shooting at hog hunters

On Aug. 14, Clark County deputies were dispatched to Open Banks Road near the second grain bins for a report of someone identifying himself as a game warden and shooting toward the caller.

Deputies arrived and talked to a pair of hog hunters accompanying a juvenile hunter on their farm when a vehicle pulled up, shining and flashing their high beams, then yelling “Federal Game Wardens: We will shoot you if you do not get out of the truck!”

The hunters said they exited their vehicle and approached the suspect, who sped off and fired multiple shots back at them.

Given a description of the suspect vehicle, an Arkansas State Trooper caught up with the suspect, identified as Joshua Benton Taylor, 22, of Gurdon, at Shakertown Road near Daughtry Island. The idling vehicle was parked in the middle of the road with Taylor in the driver’s seat and two named passengers who have not been charged in connection with the incident. All three were instructed to exit the vehicle and get on the ground.

Taylor exhibited evidence of intoxication, and there were multiple open containers of alcohol in the vehicle. The trooper located a loaded Smith & Wesson 9mm pistol in the front passenger door and ammunition in the front center console.

Taylor was arrested and taken to the county jail, where he refused to submit to a chemical test.

Bond was set at $15,000 during a first court appearance.

Taylor is charged with Aggravated Assault, a Class D felony, as well as misdemeanor charges of criminal impersonation, DWI, refusal to submit and criminal trespass.
