South Arkansas coach dies in side-by-side rollover

A side-by-side accident early Saturday morning claimed the life of a high school coach in Mineral Springs.

According to an Arkansas State Police preliminary fatal crash summary, 26-year-old William E. Dixon III, of Mineral Springs, was driving a 2019 Can Am north on Schaal road in rural Howard County when he drove off the highway. The vehicle overturned several times, killing Dixon.

The crash happened at 4:55 a.m. under clear skies and on dry roads, according to investigating Trooper Zane Butler.

Dixon led the Mineral Springs Hornets volleyball program.

Mineral Springs School District Superintendent Jondavid Amerson has since posted a statement to the district’s website, saying, “Coach Dixon was a proud graduate of Mineral Springs and meant so much to so many. He was an amazing colleague, son, family member, friend, mentor, coach and a valued part of the Mineral Springs Hornet Family. His impact on our students, staff and community will not be forgotten.”

Editor’s Note: Preliminary Arkansas State Police fatality reports sometimes contain information that turns out to be inaccurate. Typical errors include spelling errors in names, or incorrect ages; outdated hometown information; vehicle direction of travel; and incident times. The ASP sometimes corrects these errors in updated reports. ASP reports omit names of passengers or drivers who are not injured, even in instances when uninjured drivers may appear to be at fault. The reports also omit names of juveniles who were injured or killed, although we report those names when obtained through other sources.
