20 counts of child porn for Arkadelphia man
A Cyber Tip led to the arrest of an Arkadelphia man on multiple counts of child pornography charges.
Special agents with Arkansas State Police named the suspect as Elijah Simon Singleton, 22.
On April 9, an agent investigated a Cyper Tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The tip was a result of the uploading of sexually explicit digital media to Google.
Google provided the suspect’s digital information and submitted 30 files suspected to be child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The investigator reviewed the files, each of which contained video of prepubescent children engaged in sexual conduct.
Indicted on 40 counts, Singleton was formally charged with 20 counts of Distributing/Possessing or Viewing Matter Depicting Sexually Explicit Conduct with a Child, each a Class C felony that carries a potential prison sentence of 3-10 years and/or a fine of up to $10,000.
Singleton’s bond was set at $85,000 during his first court appearance.
Texas man caught sleeping in Arkadelphia home
A Texas man is wanted in connection with what investigators are calling a home invasion.
At around 4:22 a.m. on May 5, a resident of 2707 Walnut St. phoned 911 to report an individual identifying himself as “Allen” had entered his residence and lay in the caller’s bed.
The caller advised that he had told “Allen” to leave, but that he was still wandering around outside. He further gave police a description of “Allen”. He again dialed 911 to report “Allen” was now at his neighbor’s side door, and believed that he was trying to make entry.
Police responded to the area and located the suspect, ultimately identified as Allen Edward Melvin, of Breckenridge. Melvin, 47, told officers that he was looking for a place to get warm and that he was knocking on the door in hopes for assistance.
A detective later spoke with the caller and his wife, who said she was asleep in bed when she was awakened by a strange man lying next to her. She said she exited the bedroom and entered another room to advise her husband of the situation. The stranger then exited the bedroom and was confronted and told to leave.
An incident report on file at the Arkadelphia Police Department says officers gave Melvin a courtesy ride to the Pilot Travel Center in Caddo Valley.
An arrest warrant was issued May 17.
Melvin is charged with Residential Burglary, and prosecutors are seeking a sentence enhancement given his status as a habitual offender. The Class B felony carries a prison sentence of 5-40 years.
Drug dealer tasered in struggle with state trooper
An Arkadelphia man charged as a drug dealer tried to escape an Arkansas State Police trooper.
Kenneth Lewis Jr., 31, was pulled over May 16 as he left the Exxon station at 10th and Pine streets. State Trooper Sean Weston had taken note of the cracked windshield on Lewis’s SUV, and a registration check revealed the likely driver had a suspended license and multiple warrants for his arrest.
Detecting the odor of marijuana, Trooper Weston asked Lewis if he had any drugs on him. Lewis produced a small amount from his shirt pocket. The trooper returned to his patrol vehicle, and dispatchers confirmed the warrants. Back at Lewis’s SUV, he was asked to exit the vehicle while Weston conducted a search. He found marijuana and cocaine.
As Weston was handcuffing Lewis he “engaged in a brief struggle” before attempting to run away. Weston foiled Lewis’s escape plan by “kicking his legs out from underneath him” while repeatedly ordering him to stop, advising he would be tasered if he continued resisting. Lewis regained his footing and continued fleeing eastbound on foot. Weston then deployed his Taser, striking and incapacitating Lewis and allowing Weston to make the arrest.
The cocaine weighed 9.8 grams. The marijuana weighed a total of 7.3 grams. Police also seized more than $400 in cash.
Lewis is charged with Possession of Cocaine with Purpose to Deliver, a Class B felony given his status as a habitual offender. He faces 5-20 years in prison for the offense, and/or a fine of up to $15,000. He’s also charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession and resisting arrest.
Bond was set at $50,000 during Lewis’s first court appearance May 18.
Agents find drugs, guns in routine traffic stop
A Hot Springs man faces multiple drug charges following an April 28 traffic stop near Amity.
Group 6 Narcotics agents were patrolling the Amity area when they spotted a vehicle with a defective brake light and a ratchet strap that appeared to be holding down the hood. A traffic stop was conducted at the Clark and Pike county line, and contact was made with the driver, Richard Dustin Kelser, 41, of Hot Springs.
Catching a whiff of marijuana upon approaching the vehicle, Kelser was asked to step outside and whether he had any pot on him. Kelser admitted to possessing about an ounce in the back seat.
Two passengers were removed from the vehicle, and Kelser handed the agents a black bag containing two individual bags of marijuana. Inside the vehicle officers found an eyeglass case containing methamphetamine and paraphernalia.
Two AR-style rifles and multiple magazines and ammunition were also located in the vehicle.
The two passengers were released, as they claimed Kelser was giving them a ride to their house down the road.
Kelser was arrested on the scene. The meth weighed 21.8 grams and the marijuana weighed 104.5 grams.
Kelser is charged with Simultaneous Possession of Drugs and Firearms, a Class Y felony punishable by 10-40 years or life in prison; Possession of Methamphetamine with Purpose to Deliver, a Class A felony that carries a potential prison sentence of 6-30 years and/or a fine of up to $15,000; and Possession of a Schedule VI Controlled Substance with Purpose to Deliver, a Class D felony punishable by up to 6 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $10,000.
A $75,000 bond was set at Kelser’s first court appearance May 1.
Traffic stop leads to drug arrest
An Arkadelphia man faces drug charges after a routine traffic stop led to the discovery of felonious amounts of marijuana. Jailers would find even more pot during the booking process.
Jeffers Willis Jefferson, 27, was pulled over May 5 when a deputy recognized Jefferson as having a suspended license. Smelling marijuana upon approaching the vehicle, the deputy inquired about his suspicions, which were met with Jefferson’s denial.
The deputy removed Jefferson from the vehicle and searched him before taking him into custody for driving with a suspended license. During the search he found more than $700 cash in numerous, different denominations.
A search of the vehicle yielded four individual bags of marijuana inside a larger bag. Jefferson was transported to the county jail. Asked multiple times whether he had any contraband on his person, Jefferson denied; however, during the booking process he surrendered more marijuana, which he had concealed beneath his genitals.
The four bags in the car weighed 28 grams, and the two bags on his person weighed 43 grams.
Jefferson is charged with Possession of a Schedule VI Controlled Substance with Purpose to Deliver, a Class D felony punishable by up to 6 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $10,000; and Furnishing Prohibited Articles, a Class B felony punishable by 5-20 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $15,000.
Bond was set at $40,000 during Jefferson’s first court appearance May 8.
