Sheriff warns of ill-intent roofers in aftermath of Amity area hail storm

Law enforcement is urging Amity area residents to be wary of door-to-door “contractors” who could be taking advantage of homeowners in the aftermath of a weekend hail storm that damaged scads of rooftops in northern portions of the county.

Clark County Sheriff Jason Watson said that, since Saturday night’s storm, door-to-door contractors have been busy pressuring homeowners into letting them repair the damages. But their work could be questionable, at best, and is likely not bonded or insured.

“There are plenty of local roofers whose references can be checked,” the sheriff said. “What these storm chasers do is use high-pressure tactics, use shoddy materials with subpar work, and disappear with the deposit you gave them.”

The high-pressure tactics used by storm-chasing scammers often include not taking no for an answer. The sheriff urged residents to report those red flags to his office by calling 870-246-2222.

“Don’t feel pressured to enter into an agreement,” Watson said. “If they’re not taking ‘no’ for an answer, call us and we’ll escort them off your property.”
