Ava Maxine “Mackey” Calhoun, age 91, of Bryant, passed from this life on Sunday, September 7, 2025, at Saline Memorial Hospital in Benton. She was born July 4, 1934, in Gurdon, the daughter of the late Buster Brown and Willie Fae Martin Gogle.
Mackey was a 1951 graduate of Gurdon High School and a 1955 graduate of St. Vincent School of Nursing. She worked at the VA Hospital, Scipio Jones School, Central High School, St. Vincent Infirmary, Benton Services Center and Alexander Youth Services Center. Granny Max was a member of First Southern Baptist Church in Bryant. She enjoyed bingo, garage sales and visiting with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Denton Calhoun, one sister, Muriel Stroud and one daughter-in-law, Judy Bradford.
Mackey is survived by her son, Dennis Bradford of Bryant, one daughter, Sheri David (Steven) of Keo, one sister, Sylvia Land of Bryant, one grandson, Josh Bradford of Atlanta, GA, and one great-great grandchild, Lexi Henson of Traskwood, along with her step-children.
Granny Max’s funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at Welch Funeral Home with Pastor Peter Cunningham officiating.
Visitation will be from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM Tuesday at the funeral home.
Interment will be in Easley Cemetery at Gurdon.
Pallbearers are Steven David, Steve Forthmon, Ronnie Forthmon, John Tipton, Melvin Key and Todd Tipton.
Honorary pallbearers are Josh Bradford and Andrew McFarland.
Memorials may be made to Special Olympics or Humane Society of Bauxite.
