If Clark County is successful in securing a grant from the Arkansas Economic Development Commission, it will repurpose the county-owned road shop as a 4-H center.

Justices of the Peace on Monday gave their unanimous nod to authorize county Judge Troy Tucker to apply for a $1.2 million Arkansas Community Assistance Grant. Tucker said that, if the county is awarded the grant, the funding would be invested into remodeling the 6,000-SF road shop adjacent to the fairgrounds. Possibilities, he added, include the addition of a kitchen for youth cooking, an outdoor greenhouse for botanical education, and perhaps even an outdoor shooting range for 4-H shooting sports.

But, Tucker noted, it’s a “very competitive” grant, with some 300 Arkansas cities, towns, counties and nonprofits vying for a piece of the pie. Applications are due July 31.

Tucker also cautioned justices that, should the grant be awarded and the county Extension Office move in, the additional space might come with higher utility costs for the Extension Office, which may later ask the Quorum Court for an increased budget later on.

AEDC will announce grant recipients this fall. CLICK HERE for more information on the grant.

Asked by one justice where the road shop would be relocated, Tucker said there are some options but did not disclose where.
