Clark County prosecutors are charging 36-year-old Kevin Jamar Mitchell with aggravated residential burglary, first-degree battery and possession of a firearm by a certain person. He has been in custody since his arrest the morning an April 10 shooting sent Dramethius Pace to the local hospital.

A $150,000 bond has been set for Mitchell’s release.

An affidavit made public this week sheds some light on the incident. When officers with the Arkadelphia Police Department arrived to a call of shots fired at 1305 Cutler St., they found blood on the front porch and learned that Pace had been shot and was en route by private vehicle to Baptist Health Medical Center-Arkadelphia.

Witnesses said they saw Mitchell arguing with Pace and Phyllis Jones on the front porch. Pace and Jones retreated inside and closed the door. Mitchell, according to witnesses, beat on the front door before retrieving a firearm from his vehicle. Witnesses said that once all the parties were inside they heard what they believed to be gunfire.

Pace was treated for a gunshot wound to his left arm and was later released. He would tell authorities that he had gone to the residence to check on a sick child, but when he arrived he saw Mitchell in a vehicle parked outside. According to Pace, the two got into a verbal altercation that led to Mitchell giving chase as Pace fled to enter the residence. When he shut the door, Mitchell allegedly pushed it open and shot Pace.

Police soon caught up with and arrested Mitchell, who told police a different story, saying that Pace approached him and began striking him through the vehicle window. Mitchell did admit to following Pace inside with a handgun, but said Pace shut his hand in the door as he was trying to shut it, causing the weapon to fire.

Mitchell’s passenger and Pace’s fiancee, Shaquaya Jones, was interviewed during the investigation. Her version of events corroborated with what Mitchell had said — that Pace started a physical altercation at Mitchell’s vehicle before retreating inside the residence — but differed in that she observed Pace and Phyllis Jones, her mother, enter the residence a short time before Mitchell pushed the door in. She said another physical altercation ensued indoors, followed by a “loud clap” before Pace exited the residence, bleeding.

Mitchell and Jones then left the scene and traveled to a business at 16th and Pine streets, where Mitchell picked up his brother, Torrance Daniel, and took the semi-automatic 9mm pistol to Daniel’s residence on Lincoln Street. Mitchell and Jones returned Daniel back to his workplace shortly before police located them at Mitchell’s residence at 1310 Logan St. Daniel would later give consent for police to retrieve the weapon from his residence.

Mitchell is due for arraignment in Clark County Circuit Court on May 13, 2025. A previously convicted felon, Mitchell could face up to life in prison for the charge of aggravated residential burglary, a Class Y felony.
