Arkadelphia Recreation Center basketball court reopening Sept. 21

After three long months, the basketball court at the Arkadelphia Recreation Center will reopen on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024.

Beginning Monday, Sept. 9, Arkansas-based company Gym Masters will start restoring the gym floor. The process will take one week to repair, and one week to cure, allowing the court to reopen on Sept. 21.

The court has been closed since June 2024 due to a moisture issue in the floor. The city contracted Gym Masters to come inspect the floor who proposed two options:

  1. Sand down the floor, let it dry, and see if it returns to its normal size.
  2. Replace the gym floor if option #1 is not successful.

The cost difference between these options was $88,000. Fortunately, option #1 was successful, but required patience and time.

“We cannot thank everyone enough for their patience and understanding as we worked through this issue,” Parks and Recreation Director Stuart Tapson said. “We were measuring the floor every day to see if it was dropping, and it was, but it was a slow process. We are excited to reopen the court and hope to see everyone on September 21.”

The Recreation Center will be closed from Wednesday, Sept. 11, through Sunday, Sept. 15, due to fumes from the restoration process. It will reopen to walkers and fitness center users on Monday, Sept. 16.
