Clark County labor force dips as jobless rate rises in May

Clark County’s unemployment rate, not seasonally adjusted, is at 4.5% for May 2024, according to a preliminary county-by-county report released by the Arkansas Division of Workforce Services.

According to the report, Clark County had a labor force of 8,663 persons with 8,269 employed and 394 unemployed in May. This compares to April’s labor force of 8,715 with 8,398 unemployed and 317 unemployed. The unemployment rate in Clark County rose nine-tenths of a percentage point from 3.6% in April.

For the month of May, Clark County had the highest jobless rate compared to each of its six neighboring counties.

Statewide, Arkansas’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate sits at 3.3% in June, and the U.S. jobless rate is at 4.1%.

The six neighboring Southwest Arkansas counties surveyed from April to May are listed with their county seats in parentheses: i.e., Clark County (Arkadelphia):

The unemployment rate for Dallas County (Fordyce) is at 4% in May, up from 3.9% in April. Dallas County reports a labor force of 2,651.

The unemployment rate for Hot Spring County (Malvern) is at 3.5% in May, up from 3.3% in April. Hot Spring County reports a labor force of 13,670.

The unemployment rate for Montgomery County (Mt. Ida) is at 4.4% in May, no change from April. Montgomery County reports a labor force of 3,031.

The unemployment rate for Nevada County (Prescott) is at 3.5% in May, no change from April. Nevada County reports a labor force of 3,240.

The unemployment rate for Ouachita County (Camden) is at 4% in May, up from 3.8% in April. Ouachita County reports a labor force of 9,660.

The unemployment rate for Pike County (Murfreesboro) is at 3.8% in May, up from 3% in April. Pike County reports a labor force of 4,085.
