Newberry Hall, an eight-story college dormitory in Arkadelphia, is up for sale.
Henderson State University Chancellor Trey Berry told arkadelphian.com on Friday that the college no longer has any use for the now-vacant boys dorm, and that Newberry is among three properties Henderson is getting appraised for market.
Other properties include the Hickory House, at the corner of Hickory and Robey streets, and the Ramsauer House, at 327 N. 11th St. near the Chancellor’s House. Henderson bought the Ramsauer House in 2005 for $92,000, according to online real estate records.
“We know we’ll never use those properties again,” Berry said, “and we feel like we have adequate room to expand” in the future.
Newberry, the tallest landmark in Arkadelphia aside from HSU’s Smith Hall, was built in the late 1960s. It has not been used for student housing in three years, Berry said. Although there may be exceptions, Henderson will be legally obligated to sell the properties for fair market value that will be determined by a commercial appraisal.

Berry called the decision to sell “prudent business” and said the move is not in response to the university’s financial woes. The money collected from the sale of the properties will go back into Henderson’s budget, Berry said.
There are no prospective buyers as yet, he added.
