Protect your property from flood hazards

The City of Arkadelphia is continuing its work to reduce insurance rates for residential and business properties subject to flooding by the Ouachita River or torrential rain along Mill Creek, Maddox Branch and their tributaries.

The city’s participation in the National Flood Insurance Program’s Community Rating System assists in the reduction of damage or losses due to flood in both existing and future development. The city’s current rating is a class “8” on a descending scale. Flood insurance savings increase as the rating improves. The requirements for participation in the CRS program exceed the minimum standards required by the National Flood Insurance Program that provides flood insurance plans for residential and business owners.

As part of its annual community outreach, the city mails notices to residents and owners of property located in special flood hazard areas. The notices inform them about the availability of Risk 2.0 flood insurance. It also includes instructions for residents and business occupants in case of a flood. For example, it recommends that all utilities to buildings be turned off and furniture be set on blocks above the level of the water. It also recommends that residents have a prepared evacuation route in case of a flood, as driving over flooded roads is not advised.

The Clark County Library also has information in its “flood library” to help residents minimize the damage from a flood.

The City of Arkadelphia maintains a website that includes flood protection information. You may access the site via the following link: https://arkadelphia.gov/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Flood-Protection-Information.pdf. The site also features a Storm Drain Art brochure as part of the city’s ongoing storm drain awareness campaign.

In addition, the city continues to enforce stream dumping regulations that prohibit the use of any stream or drainage way for the purpose of throwing or placing leaves, stumps, brush, litter, rubbish or any other liquid or solid material within or along the banks of any such stream or natural drainage way. Keeping our drainage ditches and streams clean allows the stormwater runoff conveyance system to work properly reducing the amount of flooding caused by heavy rains.

Report illegal dumping to a floodplain administrator either in person at the City of Arkadelphia Building Department in Town Hall or by calling (870) 246-1818.
