BITS & PIECES: Beach Bum Edition

Hello from the Emerald Coast/Walt DeSantis World. Lately we’ve been busier than a Buc-ees on a summer Saturday, and like most humans we need to recharge from time to time.

Those Facebook comments were getting ugly, so we shut them down. On the road with spotty cell service when things really turned south late Friday, all we could do was disable the comments. Lesson learned: next time we post something controversial, we’ll shut down the comments at the first sign that people can’t be decent. A tiny percentage of our readers (not you, of course) have as much class as a thigh tattoo at a PCB public beach.

Compared to the prices advertised at convenience stations on the west side of Arkadelphia on Friday afternoon, gasoline prices in northern Louisiana are about 30 cents cheaper per gallon. You shrug, we shrug, but oil, well. Another observation: based on the number of political signs in Union Parish, Dusty Gates really wants to be the sheriff there. We’ve determined that having a cool, tough-sounding name is a job requirement to be a sheriff. Think about it.

It doesn’t make sense that Arkadelphia’s population isn’t on par with that of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Two colleges, one interstate highway, 48,000 residents.

A detour in Mobile led us to an oncoming funeral procession for a reserve deputy who was killed in a rollover crash on his way to work. We pulled over and stepped outside, hand over heart, to pay respects. It’s been three years since we were personally part of a procession for our beloved Brent, and witnessing a procession of that kind, albeit rare, will stop us in our tracks.
