If the wail of sirens seems to be more commonplace in Arkadelphia, that’s because firefighters are now responding to more medical emergencies than in past years.
Of the 871 calls the Arkadelphia Fire Department responded to in 2022, 47% of them were medical-related. Firefighters went to 26 structure fires, 11 vehicle fires and 22 grass fires. The department responded to 70 vehicle accidents, seven of which required passenger extraction.
The department assisted paramedics on medical calls 318 times. Additionally, AFD aided with three water rescues and 137 “other” assistance calls (responding to downed power lines, gas leaks, elevator rescues, etc.; one person called to have jewelry removed). They were summoned to set up landing zones for medical helicopters 63 times in 2022. Another 214 calls were either false alarms or canceled.
Of the 871 calls, 790 were within the city limits, 44 were outside the city limits and 37 were on Interstate 30.
The average response time, from the time of dispatch to arrival, was just over four minutes.
Information was gathered from the City of Arkadelphia’s 2022 finance and administration activity report.
