ALVA, Oklahoma — Henderson State scored 14 points off turnovers while quarterback Andrew Edwards was responsible for four touchdowns as the Reddies hung half a hundred on the Northwestern Oklahoma State Rangers in Alva, Oklahoma Saturday night, coming away with the 51-27 win.
With the win, head coach Scott Maxfield reached 119 wins for his career, tying legendary HSU coach Sporty Carpenter for all-time wins in program history. Maxfield will have an opportunity to become the winningest coach in Reddie football history Saturday, Sept. 17 when Henderson hosts Arkansas-Monticello.
After a 30-minute weather delay to start the game, senior defensive back Deldric Shields got things started off with an interception on Northwestern’s second play from scrimmage, resulting in a Korien Burrell touchdown to give HSU the early advantage, 7-0.
Both offenses traded scores on their next offensive possessions before a NWOSU punt disrupted the Ranger’s flow, opening the door for HSU to seize a two-possession lead with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Edwards to tight end Mike Benning in what was Edwards’ first collegiate touchdown.
With the 21-7 lead after the first period, Northwestern scored within the first couple of minutes on another deep pass to cut the deficit to seven, 21-14. >From there, the Reddies scored 28 unanswered points as the HSU defense held the Rangers scoreless for 37 minutes of game action.
To put the finishing touches on a dominant performance from start to finish, a garbage touchdown in the waning seconds for NWOSU led to a blocked PAT, which redshirt freshman Kolbi Crawford returned for a two-point conversion, putting the Reddies over the half-century mark, 51-27.
Henderson (2-0) will return to Carpenter-Haygood Stadium next Saturday, Sept. 17, when it hosts Arkansas-Monticello at 6 p.m.
