AHS graduate named director of suicide prevention foundation

An Arkadelphia High School graduate was named recently to the Arkansas Junior Board of Directors of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Zach West, an AHS 2021 graduate, learned about AFSP in 2018 and participated in his first Out of the Darkness Community Walk in memory of his aunt who died by suicide that year. Also a graduate of the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts, West is a current student at Hendrix College.

He is one of 10 Arkansas students named to the Junior Board of Directors. His appointment to the board was announced Tuesday, June 21.

West has participated in the Little Rock Walk every year since 2018. In 2019, he led ASMSA’s team in the Hot Springs Walk. In 2022, he served as co-chair of the Hendrix College Campus Walk. At Hendrix, West is a Miller Center Service Scholar, a member of the Volunteer Action Committee, and a recipient of the Matt L. Ellis Volunteer of the Year Award.

West said he looks forward to working with AFSP to promote suicide prevention and to provide support to those affected by suicide throughout Arkansas.
