A fiery truck crash this week in Calhoun County left one person dead.
At about 6 p.m. Monday, July 27, James Michael Westerbuhr, 48, of Monticello, was traveling south on US Highway 167 near Thornton when the 2018 Freightliner he was driving left the roadway and struck two embankments, according to a preliminary fatal crash summary posted by Arkansas State Police.
After striking the embankments the vehicle overturned and caught fire. Westerbuhr died in the crash. His remains were taken to Union County.
Following the crash, the police agency said on its social media page that an 18-wheeler carrying fuel had exploded after the single-vehicle collision, which shut the Thornton Bypass while emergency crews cleaned up the scene.
The road was dry and the weather was clear at the time of the accident, according to Senior Cpl. Sequoyah Browning, who investigated the crash.
