More than 200 community members gathered at Mt. Canaan Baptist Church for a memorable Juneteenth celebration honoring Federal Judge Adrienne C. Nelson, Judge Kolby Harper, and Miss Moriah Frazier, three distinguished African American women whose lives exemplify courage, perseverance, excellence, and service. Through inspiring tributes, heartfelt fellowship, and a shared meal, the celebration reflected not only the significance of Juneteenth, but also the enduring power of legacy.
Hosted by Pastor Rev. Johnny Harris and the Mt. Canaan Baptist Church family, the afternoon served as a meaningful reminder that while Juneteenth commemorates the triumph of freedom, it also provides an opportunity to celebrate those who continue to shape history through leadership, faith, and service. Together, the honorees represented the past, present, and future of leadership, reminding those in attendance that every lasting legacy begins with a single step taken in faith.
The highlight of the evening was the recognition of Federal Judge Adrienne C. Nelson, whose remarkable journey from Gurdon to the federal bench has become an enduring source of pride and inspiration for her hometown and beyond.
A 1985 graduate of Gurdon High School, Judge Nelson made history as the school’s first African American valedictorian. With the support of her family, she was officially recognized as valedictorian and had the honor of leading her graduating class during the 1985 commencement ceremony. Her remarkable journey has since become a powerful example of perseverance, excellence, and servant leadership.
Judge Nelson continued to break barriers throughout her distinguished legal career. She became the first African American woman appointed to the Oregon Supreme Court and later made history once again when President Joe Biden appointed her to serve as a United States District Judge for the District of Oregon, becoming the first African American woman to serve on the federal bench in Oregon. Today, Adrienne C. Nelson High School in Happy Valley, Oregon, proudly bears her name, recognizing her extraordinary contributions to justice, education, and public service.
Judge Nelson graciously shared reflections from her remarkable journey, encouraging those in attendance to pursue excellence, remain steadfast in their faith, and never allow obstacles to define their future. Her message resonated deeply with the audience and served as a powerful reminder that perseverance, integrity, and purpose can transform lives. As she concluded her remarks, the more than 200 guests in attendance rose to their feet in a heartfelt standing ovation, honoring not only her extraordinary accomplishments but also the legacy she continues to build.
Also recognized during the celebration was Judge Kolby Harper, who serves as Circuit Judge for Arkansas’s Eighth North Judicial Circuit, proudly serving the citizens of Hempstead and Nevada Counties. Judge Harper’s commitment to justice, integrity, and public service has earned her the respect of communities throughout Southwest Arkansas. Her accomplishments stand as a testament to what can be achieved through hard work, faith, and a heart for serving others while inspiring the next generation of leaders to pursue lives of purpose and service.
The church also honored Miss Moriah Frazier, one of the valedictorians of Gurdon High School’s Class of 2026. Moriah’s academic excellence, leadership, and commitment to success reflect the bright future of the Gurdon community. As a young scholar preparing for the next chapter of her educational journey, she serves as an inspiration to students who aspire to achieve excellence through dedication, perseverance, and hard work.
Throughout the celebration, guests enjoyed uplifting music, heartfelt tributes, and meaningful fellowship while reflecting on the significance of Juneteenth and the importance of celebrating those who continue to break barriers, create opportunities for others, and inspire future generations through lives of service and excellence.
Following the program, the celebration continued outdoors as church members and guests gathered to enjoy freshly grilled hamburgers and hot dogs. The meal provided an opportunity for fellowship, laughter, and conversation as friends, families, and neighbors came together in the true spirit of community. It was a fitting conclusion to a day dedicated to honoring history, celebrating achievement, and strengthening the bonds that unite us.
Mt. Canaan Baptist Church extends its sincere appreciation to everyone who attended and helped make this year’s Juneteenth Celebration a tremendous success, with special thanks to the many volunteers whose dedication, hospitality, and hard work made the event such a meaningful experience for all in attendance.
As the evening came to a close, one message resonated throughout the celebration: history is not only something we remember. It is something we continue to make through faith, courage, education, and service. While Juneteenth commemorates the triumph of freedom, this year’s celebration also honored the power of legacy. Judge Adrienne C. Nelson has built a legacy of breaking barriers and opening doors. Judge Kolby Harper is building a legacy of justice, integrity, and service to her community. Miss Moriah Frazier is beginning a legacy rooted in academic excellence and limitless potential. Together, their stories remind us that greatness often begins in small communities, and through faith, determination, and perseverance, one life can inspire generations to come.
