Special to arkadelphian.com

In remembrance of National Vietnam War Veterans Day on March 29, 2025, the Arkadelphia Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized local veterans in an informal ceremony at the Clark County Veterans Service Office.

At the invitation of Lon Ware, Clark County Director, five veterans were selected to represent the 108 Vietnam Veterans currently residing in Clark County. Beverly Jackson, Arkadelphia DAR Chapter Service for Veterans Chairperson, presented the veterans with gift cards for local restaurants and Karolynn Farnan Westall, Arkadelphia DAR Chapter member, presented each with a commemorative pin.

Those recognized were: Carol Bock – Women’s Army Nurse, and U.S. Army – Earl Bailey, Ollie Buckley, Jimmy Bryant, and Floyd Stephens.

Many served in 1968-1969 immediately after high school. Earl Bailey, Ollie Buckley, and Floyd Stephens are life-long Clark County residents and came home to live and serve as a Reynolds employee, firefighter, and grounds worker at HSU, respectively. Jimmy Bryant served with the Army Reserves as an instructor and retired here. Others attending the event included Ware and Meldene Ivory, Mayor of Gum Springs with 24 years of service with the U.S. Army. Thank You for Your Service!

The Arkadelphia DAR Chapter has sponsored the Wreaths Across America program of placing wreaths at the Little Rock National Cemetery during Christmas, distributing gift bags to veterans residing in local nursing home facilities on Veteran’s Day, and presenting veterans Gift Boxes at Christmas.

March 29 has been designated as National Vietnam War Veterans Day to pay tribute to the 9 million Americans who served during the Vietnam War era, to the 58,000 names memorialized on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C., and to those who never received the recognition they deserved.  March 29, 1973, was the day the last U.S. combat troops departed Vietnam, and also on this date, Operation Homecoming was completed when the last of 591 U.S. prisoners were released and returned to the United States.
