Dispatch Desk: Jan. 13-19

The following incidents were gathered from reports filed at the Arkadelphia Police Department and Clark County Sheriff’s Office. Names of arrested individuals were collected at the Clark County Detention Center on Crittenden Street in Arkadelphia. They are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law. The Arkadelphian does not withhold names from the arrest log, so don’t even think about asking.

Arkadelphia Police Department

Monday, Jan. 13
12:08 p.m.
Police were summoned to Walmart for a store complaint of a shoplifter who purchased some items but concealed two packages of shaving blades valued at $69. Loss prevention had detained the suspect, Tyler Matthew Whittle, 25, of Arkadelphia, who was issued a citation for theft of property.

6:11 p.m.
An officer responded to a North Ridge Drive residence for a welfare check on a woman sleeping in her car. The lady said she sometimes preferred sleeping in the car instead of her home. She agreed to be assessed at the hospital, and the officer forwarded the report to adult protective services.

7:40 p.m.
A Lark Place woman reported being verbally threatened by a known suspect outside her apartment.

Tuesday, Jan. 14
12:43 p.m.
Cpl. Randy Lau conducted a traffic stop at 6th and Clinton streets on a vehicle with an unreadable license plate. Approaching the driver’s side of the vehicle, Lau observed the driver and two passengers, and upon further approach observed what appeared to be a firearm protruding from the glove compartment. As Lau announced his presence the driver, Trevonte Dwuane Harold Buford, 26, of Arkadelphia, reached across the vehicle for the item. Lau drew his firearm and instructed the occupants to keep their hands to the roof. Buford again reached for the item. As Lau pulled the driver back his firearm went to Buford’s body, and he complied with instructions to exit the vehicle. Other officers arrived on scene and removed the passengers from the vehicle, which was searched and the firearm removed. Buford was detained and cited for driving with a suspended license and no liability insurance. The seized firearm was returned to Buford, its registered owner, after his release from detention. The front passenger, Tyra Lanae Jones, 19, also of Arkadelphia, was cited for possession of marijuana.

2:47 p.m.
A Spark delivery driver told police that a Powder Mill Apartments customer, asking for his items to be brought inside, became irate after being told that policy prohibited the request. The driver added that he set the rest of the items at the stoop and, as he proceeded to photograph the delivery, the customer approached and shoved his phone back.

Wednesday, Jan. 15
3:22 p.m.
Officers were again called to the North Ridge Drive residence for a welfare concern of a female lying face down in the yard outside the residence. The woman had tried to stand to speak to the caller but was unable to keep her balance. Officers arrived and talked to the lady, and paramedics were called to the scene. The resident said she had no heat in the house and that her car battery was dead due to the amount of time she’d spent in the vehicle. Contact was made with her daughter, who was aware of the living conditions but had exhausted options and help she had refused. A wrecker service delivered a vehicle battery to the residence, and the daughter relayed she would take her home. A hotline call was placed to adult protective services in the ongoing case.

Thursday, Jan. 16
8:51 p.m.
Officers were dispatched to 1210 N. 10th St. for a parking lot accident. The caller advised the person who hit her vehicle was intoxicated. Upon police arrival, Darryl G. Pickens, 64, of Arkadelphia, exited his vehicle and emitted the odor of intoxicants. Pickens failed a portable breath test and field sobriety tests, and was arrested for DWI, refusal to submit, no liability insurance and expired tags.

Saturday, Jan. 18
7 p.m.
A South 1st Street man reported a known male stole his roommate’s X-Box. The complainant said the suspect, known to him only by his first name, had been invited to the residence and they had been drinking, and when he left he took the X-Box and two controllers. Police were given the serial number of the gaming console, which was entered into a state database as stolen. The complainant was not able to provide further information about the suspect.

Sunday, Jan. 12
11:30 a.m.
First responders were dispatched to a house fire at 465 Scott Road, Amity. The homeowner said she was sitting in her living room and heard crackling, then saw smoke coming from the kitchen. An attempt to douse the blaze with a garden hose was unsuccessful as the water was frozen. She then called 911. Upon arrival the home was fully engulfed.

Tuesday, Jan. 14
9:51 p.m.
A resident of Highway 51 South, Beirne, reported the theft of his black Harley Davidson FLHXS Street Glide Special. The motorcycle had been parked by the front porch that morning.

Wednesday, Jan. 15
10 a.m.
First responders were dispatched to a house fire at 108 Rhodes St., Gurdon. The homeowner, Gurdon Marshal Don Childres, said he and his wife were watching TV in bed and, smelling smoke, went to investigate. Upon opening the front door, fire from the front porch reportedly shot into the house. Childres received burns to his foot while trying to escape the home.

Saturday, Jan. 18
3 p.m.
A Fendley Road (Alpine) man reported his bull had to be euthanized several days after a Jan. 2 attack by his neighbor’s dogs. He was alerted to the attack when he heard the cow bellowing in his pasture, and when he went to investigate he observed two dogs fleeing and the bull on the ground. The bovine never was able to stand again. A deputy made contact with the neighbor, Lezly Christiana Martinez, 24, and issued a citation for violating the county’s nuisance animal ordinance. She was also advised to keep her dogs put up until further notice.
