Razing begins for Central Primary School

Heavy equipment is used Monday afternoon, Oct. 21, 2024, to demolish the north portion of the former Central Primary School building on North 12th Street in Arkadelphia. Before the school was closed the district used this portion of the building to house administrative offices, a school board meeting room and an auditorium. | Joel Phelps/arkadelphian.com

Demolition work began Monday, Oct. 21, 2024, on the former Central Primary School building in Arkadelphia. A crew was active during the afternoon with heavy equipment to raze the old campus.

Arkadelphia Public Schools sold the building for $215,000 to Roger and Kadre Wingfield after the century-old campus sat on the market for several years. The Wingfields purchased the lot, which encompasses an entire city block, in September. It had originally been listed for the asking price of $690,000.

Calling the purchase a “future investment opportunity,” Roger Wingfield in early October filed for a permit from the Arkadelphia Building Department to demolish the building, and listed an estimated $300,000 to tear down the building.

The southern end of the property that runs adjacent to Pine Street is now part of an Arkansas Highway Commission right-of-way for the widening of that thoroughfare to include a turn lane. The old live oak tree at the corner of 12th and Pine streets will eventually be removed to make way for the highway project.
