Arkadelphia Arts Center hosting joint show “Among Friends”

The Arkadelphia Arts Center will hold an opening reception for “Among Friends,” from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14, 2024.

“Among Friends,” is an exhibit of paintings and collage by artists Katye Leggett and Donnie Copeland. Both artists make use of acrylic painting techniques and incorporate pattern and collage into their practices to achieve divergent outcomes.

A self-described “maximalist”, Leggett’s colorful, mixed media, still life, and figurative work touches on themes of nostalgia, womanhood, friendship, and mental health while Copeland’s nonobjective investigations of pattern, color, material, and texture focus on bridging disparate personal life experiences.

Both artists are, or will soon be, graduates of Ouachita Baptist University. As of May 11, Leggett will be a graduate of Ouachita with degrees in Studio Art and History. She plans to continue her studies in art in the Master of Fine Art program at Louisiana Tech University. Leggett recently presented her senior exhibit at Ouachita and is currently included in the 2024 Student Juried Exhibit on Ouachita’s Campus. CLICK HERE for more about Leggett’s work.

Copeland earned a BA in studio art from Ouachita Baptist University and continued his education at the University of Dallas where he earned an MFA in painting. This summer, Copeland’s paintings will be included in a group exhibit titled “Silent Surfaces: Mapping Spatial & Personal Discoveries” at the Greenville Center for Creative Art in Greenville, South Carolina. Copeland currently serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Art & Design at Ouachita Baptist University where he teaches painting and drawing among other subjects. His artistic practice is represented by Justus Fine Art in Hot Springs, Arkansas. CLICK HERE for more about Copeland’s work.

The exhibit is sponsored by the Clark County Arts and Humanities Council and will be open May 14-30 on Tuesdays from 4-6:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The Arkadelphia Arts Center is located at 625 Main St. in Arkadelphia.
