The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has announced the Atlantic Tropical Cyclones names for 2023.

A supplemental list of names A-Z (excluding Q, U, X, Y and Z) will be used if the standard tropical storm name is exhausted in the Atlantic basin.

NOAA does not name tropical storms; rather, there is a strict procedure established by the World Meteorological Organization. For Atlantic systems, there is a list of male and female names, which are used on a six-year rotation.

The 2023 cyclone names are as follows in alphabetical order:

Franklin

Gert

Harold

Idalia

Jose

Katia

Lee

Margot

Nigel

Ophelia

Philippe

Hurricane season begins on June 1.
