The Ouachita Baptist University baseball team secured its second straight Great American Conference series sweep on Monday by beating Southeastern Oklahoma State University at home by a final score of 10-2.
The victory gives Ouachita (19-8, 13-5 GAC) its seventh consecutive game win, its second consecutive GAC series sweep, and career win No. 100 for Head Coach Luke Howard.
G. Allen set the tone for the day with a towering two-run homerun on the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the first inning. The Tigers added one more in the second on an RBI double by Tallon Heine, and then put up crooked numbers in each of the third and fourth innings to take a 10-0 lead into the fifth.
The big blow for the Tigers in the third was a two-run homerun by Isaac Nowell, his fourth of the season. In the fourth inning, Wyatt Core delivered with a two-run single. Nowell picked up his third RBI of the day with an run-producing fielder’s choice groundout for Ouachita’s final score of the game.
Southeastern (14-16, 6-12 GAC) kept Ouachita scoreless in the final four innings, while reaching the scoreboard on a pair of one-run innings in the fifth and sixth, respectively.
Tiger hurlers Cade Crossland and Luke House combined for an efficient pitching effort. Crossland (1-1) earned his first collegiate win with just one run surrendered on three hits with a career-high nine strikeouts in the first five innings. Luke House earned his first collegiate save, giving up just one run on five hits in the final four innings.
Dustin Bermudez capped a productive all-around series with six assists in the win, including throwing out a runner at home on a relay from left field for the final out of the game. As a team, the Tigers were error-free in the three-game series, marking the longest streak with a zero in the error column this season.
Ouachita hits the road on Tuesday for a return trip to face off against Christian Brothers University in Memphis. The Tigers beat the Buccaneers 12-4 last Wednesday at home.
